Vintage Jewelry from the 1990s
The 1990s closed the Baroque era and ushered in a more minimalist period. Volumes became restrained, materials more refined, and ornamentation more focused. This was the era when couture jewelry began to engage in a dialogue with minimalism.
A Return to Restraint
Under the influence of designers such as Helmut Lang, Jil Sander, and early Margiela, the entire wardrobe was refined. Jewelry followed suit: streamlined sautoirs, geometric earrings, and cuffs with clean lines. Under Lagerfeld, Chanel offered a more understated interpretation of the camellia.
The Last Baroque Pieces
Christian Lacroix continued his exuberant approach. Schiaparelli reopened. The decade’s final Baroque pieces are now particularly prized as a counterpoint to more streamlined collections.
The Threshold of Vintage
A piece from 1995 or 1998 is now more than twenty-five years old: technically, it falls into the vintage category. For collectors, this is often the most accessible entry point into signed vintage.
